  • Severe or throbbing toothaches
  • Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth

  • Dental abscesses, facial swelling, or signs of infection
  • Pain from impacted wisdom teeth

What to Do Before You Reach Our Office

Knocked-out tooth: Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing, try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in a container of milk. Call us right away, since time is critical for saving the tooth.

Broken or chipped tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any fragments, and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling.

Toothache: Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums.

Lost crown or filling: Keep the crown if you have it and avoid chewing on that side until you can be seen.

Emergency Treatment Options

Once we examine the area and take digital X-rays, Dr. Mitelberg will recommend treatment to relieve your pain and protect your tooth. Depending on the problem, this may include a filling, a porcelain crown, root canal therapy, or a gentle extraction. If a tooth is lost, we can discuss replacement options such as dental implants or a bridge.

For children’s dental injuries, see our pediatric emergency dental care page. If you have a life-threatening emergency, such as difficulty breathing or swallowing or uncontrolled bleeding, go to the nearest emergency room.

Emergency Dental Care FAQs

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe tooth pain, a knocked-out or broken tooth, facial swelling, signs of infection, and bleeding that won’t stop are all dental emergencies.

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

Hold the tooth by the crown, rinse it gently, try to place it back in the socket or store it in milk, and call (973) 942-3233 right away.

Can you see me the same day for an emergency?

We do our best to see emergency patients as quickly as possible. Call our office as soon as the problem occurs.

Is a toothache an emergency?

A severe or persistent toothache, especially with swelling or fever, may signal an infection and should be treated promptly.

What should I do if my face is swollen?

Facial swelling can indicate a serious infection. Call us immediately, and go to the emergency room if swelling affects your breathing or swallowing.

What if my crown falls off?

Keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side, and call us to have it evaluated and re-cemented or replaced.
